Describe a time when you broke something
You should say:
·What it was
·When / where that happened
·How you broke it
·And explain what you did after that
Idea: trying to help, but things went wrong
·What: a friend’s laptop / a family member’s vase
·When/where: at their home / during a study session
·How: accidentally knocked it over / spilled something on it
·After: apologized, tried to fix it, offered to pay
·I was just trying to help, but I accidentally made it worse.
·I felt really bad because it wasn’t even mine.
关键词:help / accidentally / feel bad / offer to pay
Idea: lost temper, then regretted immediately
·What: a remote control / a phone screen
·When/where: at home after a bad day
·How: threw it / slammed it down too hard
·After: realized it was childish, had to replace it
·I was really frustrated about something else.
·In that moment I wasn’t thinking clearly.
·After I broke it, I immediately regretted it.
关键词:frustrated / lost my temper / regretted / learned to control emotions
Idea: valuable item, pure accident
·What: my mom’s glasses / a camera lens
·When/where: at home / during travel
·How: sat on it / dropped it without noticing
·After: felt terrible, confessed, saved up to repair
·I didn’t realize how fragile it was.
·When I saw the damage, my heart sank.
关键词:fragile / heart sank / confess / save up
What you did after that(怎么做更自然)
表达:
·I apologized immediately.
·I tried to fix it myself, but I couldn’t.
·I told the truth even though I was scared.
·I offered to buy a new one.
·I learned to be more careful from that day on.
·At first, I was just relaxed / in a hurry.
·Then suddenly, it broke. I froze.
·I felt really nervous and guilty.
·After a while, I calmed down and decided to deal with it.
·Looking back, I’m glad I learned something from it.
·I’d like to talk about a time when I accidentally broke something.
·It happened a few months ago at home. I broke my dad’s favorite coffee mug.
·I was just making myself a cup of tea, nothing unusual.
·But then I slipped and the mug fell on the floor.
·I just stood there for a few seconds, not knowing what to do.
·I cleaned it up, told my dad honestly, and bought him a new one.
·It taught me to be more careful and to always tell the truth.
Sample Answer(完整范文)
I’d like to talk about a time when I accidentally broke something, and honestly, I still feel a bit guilty about it.
It happened about two months ago at my friend’s house. I was helping him prepare for an exam, and we were studying in his living room. He went to the kitchen to get some drinks, and I stayed there, looking at his notes.
On the table next to me, there was a small glass trophy — it was from a basketball competition he had won a few years ago. I didn’t think much of it. I just reached out to grab a pen, and my elbow accidentally knocked the trophy off the table. It fell onto the floor and broke into several pieces.
At first, I just froze. I didn’t know what to say. I felt really bad because I knew how much that trophy meant to him. When he came back, I immediately apologized and told him exactly what happened. He was a bit sad, which was completely understandable, but he didn’t get angry.
After that, I helped him clean up the pieces. Then I went online and found a similar trophy. I ordered it and gave it to him a few days later. He was actually quite touched that I tried to make it right.
Looking back, I think that experience taught me two things. First, be more aware of my surroundings, especially when there are fragile things nearby. Second, when you make a mistake, the best thing to do is to be honest and try to fix it.
Even though breaking something is never a good feeling, I’m glad I handled it in a way that didn’t hurt our friendship.
