In general, although more people were employed in small-scale fishing boats, smaller vessels had less catch than large ships. Besides, the operating cost of larger ships far outnumbered that of small boats both in terms of annual pay for employees and the fuel consumption.

Also, 65,000 gallons of fuel was needed for a larger vessel, whereas for a smaller vessel, only 8,500 gallons were necessary.
