Question

Your professor is teaching a class on education. Write a post responding to the professor's question. In your response, you should do the following:
-Express and support your opinion.
-Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words
An effective response will contain at least 100 words

Doctor
Volunteerism refers to the act of offering your time and service without financial compensation to benefit a community, organization, or cause. While many people volunteer mainly to help others, some institutions have mandatory volunteer programs. High schools are one example, where students may be required to complete a certain number of volunteer hours to graduate. What do you think? Should high school students be required to do volunteer work? Why or why not?

Student 1
Yes, I think high schools should require volunteer hours because it helps students build a sense of civic responsibility. Many teenagers don’t naturally think about helping others, and this requirement can introduce them to the idea that their time and effort can make a real difference in the lives of others.

Student 2
I don’t think volunteer hours should be required because many students already have limited free time. Some have part-time jobs or take care of younger siblings after school. Adding a mandatory volunteer requirement could create extra stress and make it harder for those students to balance their existing responsibilities.

I don’t think high school students should be made to do voluntary work. It is true that a person can learn many lessons from volunteering. Through experiences such as tutoring underprivileged children and visiting an elderly home, students may have an enhanced level of civic engagement. They tend to better understand the needs of different communities, become more connected to their homes and learn to appreciate their lives. However, such benefits are unlikely to occur if volunteering is made involuntary.【条件状语从句】 Some students do not believe they are doing anything important or worthwhile. Those half-hearted individuals are likely to do more harm than good. Organizers of volunteer programs may have to spend extra time correcting mistakes or dealing with unhelpful behaviors from uncommitted students. In my opinion, instead of making volunteering a go-to activity for graduation, schools can just encourage students to do it by offering extra credits. In this way, young people can still have an autonomy over the events they would like to be involved in, and gain the advantages of volunteering at the same time.

However, such benefits are unlikely to occur if volunteering is made involuntary.

In my opinion, instead of making volunteering a go-to activity for graduation, schools can just encourage students to do it by offering extra credits.
