Question

Your professor is teaching a class on society. Write a post responding to the professor's question.
In your response, you should do the following:
•express and support your opinion.
•make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.
An effective response will contain at least 100 words.

Doctor Gupta
Today, we are going to discuss an emerging work arrangement known as job sharing. Job sharing is a type of employment in which one full-time position can be shared by two part-time workers, that is, the two people share the work hours, and pay of one job. For example, two part-time accountants share one full-time accounting position, splitting the responsibilities of the position. Do you think the job-sharing arrangement is a positive trend? Why or why not?

Kelly
I’m not sure job sharing is a good idea. I think it would be too confusing for employers to keep track of who is working on which day or who is responsible for certain projects. Co-workers who have questions about certain projects would also get confused about which person to address their questions to.

Paul
I think job sharing can lead to more fulfilling lives for a lot of people. Many workers want to continue developing their careers but don’t want to spend so much time working full-time jobs. Some people want to spend time developing their hobbies or taking classes, for example. Job sharing could be very convenient for their schedules.

I think Paul’s perspective is more reasonable. Job sharing is indeed a positive development, as it promotes a better work-life balance【原因状语从句】. When two individuals share the same position on a part-time or reduced-time schedule, both can allocate more time to attend appointments, run errands, or spend quality time with their families. The flexibility they have when job sharing enables them to prioritize their responsibilities at both work and home while still fulfilling their job duties. Although Kelly argues that job sharing may complicate the tracking of workers’ responsibilities, this issue can be easily addressed. When implementing a job sharing strategy, leadership should first determine how to divide the responsibilities. Companies may opt for the twin model, where each job share partner performs the same tasks and shares identical responsibilities, or the islands model, where the work and responsibilities are split based on each partner’s skills and strengths.【定语从句】 Ultimately, it is the leadership skills, rather than the job sharing strategy itself, that influence the outcome of the work.【强调句】

allocate v. 分配
例句:
The government is allocating £10 million for health education.

After school he runs errands for his father.

quality time n.

prioritize v.
You must learn to prioritize your work.

complicate v.
The rescue operation has been complicated by bad weather.

leadership n.

Job sharing is indeed a positive development, as it promotes a better work-life balance.

Companies may opt for the twin model, where each job share partner performs the same tasks and shares identical responsibilities, or the islands model, where the work and responsibilities are split based on each partner’s skills and strengths.

Ultimately, it is the leadership skills, rather than the job sharing strategy itself, that influence the outcome of the work.
